Post Secret: Violations of the First Amendment

As I was reading Post Secret, as I do every sunday morning, one of them stuck out to me.

Isn't the US supposed to be a melting pot of religions, races, ethnicities and ideas?  Why is it so hard to switch religions then?  Religion is often a topic that causes conflict because people, for what ever reason, don't seem to want to coexist peacefully.  Also, I think that since 9/11, people have been paranoid about religions like Hinduism and Islam, that stem from the east.

We tend to think of America as a "free country" that lets you practice whatever religion you choose.  It is even outlined in the first amendment as it says we have "free exercise of religion".   Yet today there is still religious oppression, as seen in this post secret.

What an interesting post, and you bring up a great point. It is our first amendment right to have freedom of religion, yet why do such tight rules and laws make it so hard for a person to switch religions? America prides itself for having such freedoms, so why then, do we have this issue? I think our country as a whole should work on making it easier to switch religions (because it's okay if people change beliefs or don't believe in the same things as their parents). We also need to respect all religions, even if we don't hold the same opinion and agree with it. Thanks for such a thought provoking post!

  2. Dani and Brooks,

I totally agree with you both. I think that there is are many flaws to switching religions, some of which stems from being passed down your parents religions. While I understand that the parents want their child to be raised with the same beliefs as them, getting your parents religion puts almost a personal offense in such an individual decision like switching beliefs.
